Security Funding for Places of Worship

In the four weeks following the EU referendum result, more than 6,000 incidents of hate crime were reported to police. This shocking statistic led the home office to announce last month that it is creating a £2.5m fund to allow places of worship, including mosques and churches, to upgrade their security measures.

Places of worship in England and Wales (excluding the Jewish community as there is already a similar fund in place for Jewish sites) must submit a bid to the home office explaining their need for increased security, evidence that they have had a site survey completed by an MLA approved security provider along with a quote from 3 providers and their completed application form. In order to qualify for the funding, the place of worship must also be able to pay 20% of the final costs themselves.

This funding can be used to pay for the following;

  • CCTV
  • Perimeter fencing
  • Access control gates
  • Bollards
  • Door locks
  • Window locks
  • Intruder alarm
  • External lighting
  • Security doors

Other similar security measures may be funded by the home office.

By increasing security measures in places of worship, the Home Office is hoping to bring peace of mind to all religions and show them that the government will not stand for crime of hate against any religion. It is also hoped that security measures such as CCTV and access control will deter potential criminals.

The bidding for funding is set to close on Tuesday the 20th of September. After that, an advisory panel made up of representatives from a wide range of religious communities who also have expertise in security issues will meet with representatives from the police to reach a decision about each bid they have received. The place of worship will be notified of the decision that has been made by Wednesday the 9th of November.
