Could Amazon Selfie Payment be the Next Big Thing?

If the world had been told 50 years ago that we would be regularly paying for our goods on a piece of plastic which automatically deducts the money from your bank account, they wouldn’t have believed you. Even more so if you say that all you have to do is hover the plastic over the terminal to make the contactless payment.

As Neils Bohr once said;

“Technology has advanced more in the last thirty years than in the previous two thousand. The exponential increase will only continue.”

And it seems he was right. Online retail giant, Amazon have found a way to take payments, more specifically online payments, into the future by applying for a patent to allow their customers to pay by selfie. Yes, you read that right. Selfies, a picture taken of yourself by yourself which took the world by storm these past few years, could soon be a method of paying for your online purchase.

With Amazon’s unique one click purchasing feature, all you need to do is log into your account to make a purchase and your payment details will all be saved within the account. In order to assist users by not having to remember passwords and login details, Amazon hopes to use the convenience of biometrics to let their users log in.

Biometric technology is more commonly used in the form of fingerprint scanners and sometimes used in the form of retina scanners too but Amazon are looking to use facial recognition as a replacement for passwords.

While this is big news in the online retail industry, the idea isn’t as new as you may think. Some MasterCard customers have already been given the chance to use a type of selfie authentication in the form of an app which allows payment by prompting the user to make certain faces for the camera. So it seems like the idea is catching on.

What do you think? Can you see a world where all we will need to purchase a product is our face? Or do you think technology has gone too far?
